For a number of years our partners in Peru have sponsored Organic Coffee Festivals. These festivals are teaching the producers to be proud of the organic coffee they produce and to have pride in their heritage, culture, and their own community.
Each community selects a princess to represent their community at the festival. To be chosen as queen, each princess must demonstrate their knowledge about growing and processing organic coffee and articulate her knowledge in a presentation at the festival. Her costume must also reflect her connection to coffee.
During the festival there is also a cooking contest for the best ‘typical dish'. Each of these events is helping to create a better self-image for the women in these communities.
These efforts are the first steps in trying to change a way of life.
